What Is iTero Digital Impression Technology?
The iTero scanner is a small, handheld wand that takes thousands of tiny images of your teeth and gums as it glides along your smile. Those images are stitched together in real time to build an accurate 3D model on a screen right in front of you. There is nothing to bite into and nothing that needs time to harden. Most scans are finished in just a few minutes, and many patients enjoy watching their own smile take shape on the monitor as we go. This same digital model can be shared instantly for planning crowns, clear aligners, and other treatments, without a physical mold ever leaving the room. To see how this fits into the rest of our in-house technology, visit our Technology page.
Benefits of Digital Impressions Over Traditional Molds
Traditional putty molds have worked for decades, but they come with real downsides: a strong gag reflex, a messy taste, and the risk of a mold shifting before it sets. Digital impressions solve most of these problems at once, which is why our team leans on them for everyday care.
- No more dental putty molds sitting in your mouth for minutes at a time
- Faster appointments, since scanning takes just a few minutes per arch
- A more precise fit for crowns, aligners, and other custom appliances
- Fewer redo appointments caused by a mold that shifted or didn't set right
- A gentler experience for patients with a sensitive gag reflex or dental anxiety
We often use the scanner during routine Cleanings & Exams visits, so getting a digital impression rarely means an extra trip to our office.
What to Expect During Your Digital Impression Visit
When it's time for your scan, one of our team members will walk you through what's happening every step of the way. You'll sit back in the chair just like you would for a normal exam. We'll gently move the wand along your teeth, capturing images as we go, and you can watch the 3D model build on the screen beside you if you'd like. There's no numbing needed, no strong taste, and no holding still while material sets. Most full scans wrap up in a few minutes, and you're free to talk, swallow, or take a short break at any point.
What Happens If You Skip Digital Impressions
Digital impressions aren't required for every single visit, and traditional molds are still used in some situations. If you skip a digital scan when one is recommended for a specific treatment, such as a crown or a set of clear aligners, we may need to rely on a putty mold instead. That can mean a less comfortable appointment and, in some cases, a higher chance the fit needs adjusting later. We'll always explain when a digital impression is the better option for your care, and we're happy to answer any questions before moving forward.
